Welcome to Burstin with Broadway! |
Vancouver's non-auditioned mixed voice performance ensemble has burst onto the North Shore! We just completed our 4th season and are currently 93 members. We accept members of all levels of musical training and skill, from those who can't read music and have never sung to some who have spent years singing in musical theatre or choirs. We sing "Broadway" music which is music taken from Musical Theatre repertoire, which spans a large gamut of musical styles, from the more classical American musicals of the late 20s and early 30s, such as Showboat, and Anything Goes, to the most modern musicals of this decade such as Wicked, and Hairspray.
"Every season I choose music that covers different eras of musical theatre, which allows us to challenge ourselves vocally and musically. Musical theatre has such great and varied repertoire to choose from. In Lion King we get to sing African harmonies, and stylings, in Grease it's rock and roll and gospel, in South Pacific it's a more classical style of singing. It's so challenging and fun to try to bring each style to life, and the goal is always to sing the music as authentically as possible. American Musical Theatre is its own genre and needs to be sung as such. " - Dominique Hogan It has been an exciting year of growth, and just finished performing to two full houses on May 30th at the Kay Meek Centre! It was great fun. We are looking forward to another great season. Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don't understand the language that you're singing in, they still know good music when they hear it. -Lou Rawls

I often hear people say, "I love musical theatre, but I don't think you'd want ME in your choir, I CAN'T SING!", and to them I say, "why not!? You are exactly who I want in my choir". If you are willing to learn and sing your heart out, my job will be to create a strong ensemble with that energy! Most people who think they can't sing, had some sort of experience as a child where they were told not to sing, whether it was your school music teacher, elementary teacher or someone in your family. If you can speak you can sing, and you don't need to have musical training to love singing music." | | | | Dominique Hogan, Artistic Director |
